Hand Stitched Norwegian Woolen Tapestry – SOLD
This embroidered wool wall tapestry is done in a technique called “klostersøm” – translated to “monastery stitch”. In the monastery method, the stiches are straight up and down in rows which you can see on an image zoom.
Stars are a very common theme in the Norwegian klostersøm embroidery. The colors on this piece are charcoal black, rust red, oranges, white, blue and green. You can just imagine this hanging in a Norwegian “hytte” – mountain cabin. There’s a piece of wood sewn into the bottom, probably to weigh it down as it hangs.
It’s 14″ wide be 26″ tall and weighs 6 ounces. We’re guessing it’s 30-40 years old. There is some discoloration on the backing but it doesn’t effect the front of the tapestry.
Designer Tip: A great idea with pieces like this is to make them into toss pillows. The long piece sold here can easily be cut down the middle for two identical toss pillows, sure to be admired by your visitors! Or leave it long for your bed.
