Red Wooden Rosemaling Plate

Done with the Os rosemaling technique, this is a typically bright and cheerful plate following the characteristics of the Os style.  The style is identified by its heavy line-work and less dimensional shading.  More asymmetrical in its layout, this piece reflects the more elaborate Os’ embellishment of the C and S scrolls of rosemaling.

The background color is typical Norwegian red/rust, and the design is done in bright red, blues, greens and tans with heavy black and white accenting; all per the Os style.  A black border adds to the strong decor.

There are no dents or scratches that we can see with only a light (paint?) smudge on the back.  The plate weighs 9oz and measures just under 10″ in diameter and stands around 1-1/3″ tall.

Perhaps originally a set, we have another plate of the same size and Os style but in blue with a different pattern.  It’s apparent the same artist painted both plates and they were both for sale in the same vintage store.  The other piece has an inscription that it was hand painted in Norway in 1970 so we assume the same applies for this plate.  See the other piece here.
