Norwegian Figgjo was established in 1941 and is renowned for its quality porcelain tableware. Such was their recognition that many Norwegian companies commissioned Figgjo to create proprietary pieces for marketing. In the 60’s, Vestfold Flatbrødfabrik, a producer of flatbread and crisp bread established in 1919, did exactly that and commissioned a complete series that customers could collect. The theme was a famous Norwegian folk song about Per who traded his cow for a violin. Here’s a website with a translation of the song: lyrictranslate.com. On the back of each platter, you’ll find the music and a message from Vestfold Flatbrødfabrik.
So, now you know the background for these three Figgjo platters we’re happy to present. Called “smørefjøl”, they are large enough for a slice of wonderful Norwegian bread for you to butter and top with cheese. If you prefer, though, you can hang them on your wall – there’s a convenient hole at the top of the platters – which is what many Norwegians did.
The platters are 6″ tall and 4.25″ wide at the top. They each weigh just over 8 ounces. As can happen to older porcelain – these are 50+ years old – there is some crazing in two of them which you can see if you click on an image that zooms in, but otherwise, they are in great shape.
