We’ve never seen this before. It’s a wooden Rosemaling beer bowl with a spout for pouring out the beer or mead. Watch our video below. In the Viking times, you didn’t lift your glass to make a toast, you passed the beer bowl. Read this article on The Viking Herald about the Old Norse beer bowl.
And this one is special. It’s painted by the renowned Rosemaling painter, Kari Pettersen. Here’s a Norwegian article about Kari. Painting Rosemaling for over 40 years, Kari has written several books about Rosemaling techniques.
The bowl is signed by Kari, and the woodworker has stamped the bottom with his initial, R. The bowl is Telemark style with it’s signature C-scroll. It’s a dark green with flower decorations in rusts and reds, gold and olives with cream colored accents. The inscription around the top says “Det er fagnad i fint fylgje” which translates to “There is pleasure in fine company”, a quote from Asbjørnsen and Moes Norwegian Fairytales. At the bottom, it says “Year 2005″
The bowl is in great condition. It’s 9.5″ at the widest, and just under 4” tall. It weighs 12.5oz.
NOTE: This is a decorative piece only. Although we’re demo’ing pouring water, don’t drink from this bowl.
