Shallow Wooden Rosemaling Bowl

$129.00

Signed by the artist, J. Aaltvedt, and dated 1974, this wooden Rosemaling bowl is 50 years old.

A Norwegian inscription painted around the outer rim says; “Å leva, det er i livet å finna det største verd, å leva, det er å vinna til sanning i all si ferd”.

This is a quote from a song often used in weddings and roughly translated says; To live is to find that largest value, to live is to win in truth in all travels”.  This bowl was perhaps a wedding present.

The bowl is painted in subdued, delicate colors.  The base is a beige that fades to a blue tone around the inner rim.  In Telemark-style, the design includes the traditional S- and C-curves in reds, blues and yellows with flower decorations in the same colors as well as oranges and greens.  The bottom of the bowl is painted in the traditional Norwegian barn red, with the outer rim in blue.  The writing is in black and encircles the entire bowl.

Around 12.5″ in diameter and weighing around 2lbs 4 ounces, the bowl is in remarkable shape for its age and we can’t see any dents or cracks.  There is one very minor scratch – maybe 1/2″ in the bottom of the bowl – but you have to look hard to see it.
